  1. This was a great movie, one of my official top 5. Rock on.

  2. I liked Whiteout and Sorority Row. Hm.

  3. Great idea!
I’ve got a few ideas bouncing around in my head. I’ll see if I can pick a good one for ya tomorrow!

  4. The song “We’ll Meet Again” by Vera Lynn featured at the end of “Dr. Strangelove” (also in the middle of “Hellboy”, and at the beginning of the remake of “The Crazies” (Johnny Cash version)). It’s written to be a ray of hope to soldiers going off to war, but within the context film it takes on a grim tone.
Now whenever I hear the song it always reminds me of the inevitability of death. Even though you’ve made it through your ordeal alive, death will meet you again.

  5. That is a fantastic visual, with all of the mushroom clouds and the bombs and the…

I think I need to watch Strangelove again. :)

  6. Great review! I feel you on the Canned Heat. The only time one of their songs was put to good use, cinematic-wise, was “On the Road Again” in the 1990 Kiefer Sutherland/Dennis Hopper comedy “Flashback.”

  7. Johnny Slick Johnny Slick

Yeah, I definitely put it up with “Moon” and “Inglourious Basterds” on my best-of-09 list.

  8. Johnny Slick Johnny Slick

That is aWesome with a capital W.

  9. That was a treat! I think that would be a fun group to see live. Thanks for exposing us to CCD!

    • I can’t beLIEVE I never saw them when I lived in Durham and they were playing there all the time, especially since it turns out Rhiannon and I have a mutual friend.
      Ah, well. Now I know.

      • Bartcow Bartcow

Oh yeah, by the way: have you heard the Carolina Chocolate Drops? They’re really good. They’re from NC, and they’re starting to get some major music press notice. We should totally check them out. They’re playing somewhere around town all the time. I have their first album on my computer; wanna listen?

I really didn’t think they’d be your bag, for some reason. They’re no Big Head Todd and the Monsters, after all. Sorry I sold you short.

Side note: Lost in the Trees is now on a major label, and All Alone in an Empty House is being rerecorded/remixed and expanded. Whoo hoo!

  10. That is a fair counter-point. My favorite bit was where the boom mike dropped into frame. That was perfect.

  11. Johnny Slick Johnny Slick

That is a really cool sound that they have. So out of the ordinary and yet so close to a few different classic styles (bluegrass, hip-hop, old school blues, I think I even detected a bit of the tango in there).

  12. Thanks for taking one for the team, yo!

The only thing worse than sitting through a piece of crap movie because you have to review it is watching what is really supposed to be a piece of crap movie because it has every single element of a piece of crap movie including Sandra piece of crap Bullock and then discovering that oh holy crap you actually LIKED it. DAMN YOU TO HELL SANDRA BULLOCK

AND BILLY BEANE THE CREATOR OF MONEYBALL

  13. As Slick must know by now, it is ok for him to be wrong :D That’s fair, but I still say that BD was the second best movie of 09. I tend to rank by enjoyment and what I remember from watching it. I remembered scene for scene a month after I watched it, and I have never laughed so hard. I liked The Hangover a lot and in many was they two movies are similar types of comedy, but I still love me some Black Dy No Mite!

  14. For the record, Sandra Bullock is one of those actresses that I will forgive the occasional acting misstep because she’s completely freaking hawt.

Plus, she’s the favorite for the Best Actress Oscar for this film. I’m rooting for Meryl Streep, though.

  15. Bartcow Bartcow

Well, “Stuck in the Middle” literally makes my ears hurt now.

Thanks to Boogie Nights, I now have a clearer understanding of “Mama Told Me Not To Come”.

“Lust for Life” makes me want to shoot heroin and go on a Carnival Cruise. Does that count?

  16. Johnny Slick Johnny Slick

I am still not convinced, even though I saw trailer #2 on zee big screens. The original was so, so awesome in its corniness. Giant scorpions have come to equal camp. I think it’s going to take a lot to bring that out of silly but awesome because you were 7 years old when it came out and actually good.

    • Agreed, but clearly they aren’t going for camp here. I’m willing to separate the two and enjoy them both.

  17. To quote a wise man: “Television! Teacher. Mother. Secret Lover.”

You forgot “gorram”. TURN IN YOUR GEEK BADGE NOW. WHY AM I YELLING

    Word: Gorram
    Origin: Firefly
Definition: Some sort of futuristic swear word, possibly Chinese in origin.
Example: “Those gorram feds are after us.”

I’m all about the inclusion of bitchcakes and blurgh, though.

    • In my defense, I limited myself to a list of 10 and I already had 4 perfectly good curse words. Gorram will be included in my corrected addition next year.
Hollis J. Caveman´s last blog ..I’m not dead…I’m just not on Twitter anymore. My ComLuv Profile

    • Turn in YOUR geek badge. Well, maybe not. You did suggest it, and I didn’t think of it first.
Gorram is a derivative of “goddamn.”

Also “frell,” but you said frak, which is the same thing. I just like Farscape better than BSG.

  19. Excellent list! What happened to “scrumulescent?”

  20. “We should put these heads on sticks. And put BOMBS in them!”

That’s brilliance. From the mouths/crayons of babes.

  21. I still haven’t seen that movie and I doubt I ever will, mainly because I’ll probably throw up with all the moving shots in the trees and whatnot. (That tiny little clip shown for special effects on the Oscars last night made me severely dizzy.) But kudos to you for suffering for me and letting me know how it turned out.

I have not thought about Enigma in over a DECADE. The reference made me giggle.

And the YouTube mashup you’ve provided here is one of the best that I’ve seen in quite some time. :)

    • The first time I saw conceptual art for AVATAR, I thought of Return to Innocence. So disappointing how it turned out, given my love for that song.

  22. Once I heard a bit more about Avatar’s plot, I didn’t suggest we go see it because I knew that things like the violence alone would be enough for you to dislike it. Sorry that you had to add the physical discomfort onto the rest of it. I still haven’t seen it and am with holding judgment until I do.
Samantha Stoner´s last blog ..The Spoils of War My ComLuv Profile

    • Understandable. The violence, especially the indiscriminate shooting and maiming, was a bit much for me. Just as well my eyes were watering from the 3-D.

  23. Great analysis that thankfully manages to get beyond the whole “look at the pretty colors” and deafening sound effects. Once you get down to it, there is very little substance that hasn’t already been taught to a 4-year old after a single reading of “Horton Hears a Who” or “Horton Hatches the Egg”. Thanks for a great read!

    • Yeah, I kinda thought the people who told me it was just FERNGULLY meets DANCES WITH WOLVES were giving it too much credit.

  24. I won’t see this until it’s on DVD anyway, but this commentary solidified that it will be a rental and not a purchase. Can’t really say more until I’ve viewed it. Love this!

    • Thanks! I can’t wait to see it on Cinematic Blues!

  25. Aaron Brewer Aaron Brewer

You just summed up my thoughts on this movie nearly spot on. The Baroness strikes!

    • Glad to have you on the team!

  26. I refuse to see it.
The one thing that gets me it the trailer is the line “You’re not in Kansas anymore!”. Not only is it UNBELIEVABLY cliched, the fact that they are still referencing The Wizard of Oz 150+ years in the future is baffling.
Hollis J. Caveman´s last blog ..Monday, Monday My ComLuv Profile

    • I don’t so much mind the Oz references still happening, but THAT one, in THAT script was just one more miss.

  27. Bartcow Bartcow

I’ve heard people talk about how great it is, then also proclaim love for Celine Dion, Dancing With The Stars, and any movie based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. I don’t think us pop culture junkies are the target audience for this. Maybe when we all hit menopause.

I like things that are pretty and stupid, but since I got queasy watching Hancock in a regular theater (the shaky camerawork didn’t help, either–Ha!), I know better than to even drive by an IMAX.

If I had a point to all this, it’s gone now.

    • Bartcow Bartcow

Oh my Lord. I typed that this morning, and sort of grabbed whatever “moms like it” reference I could think of. Then this afternoon, no shit, I was privy to a conversation between two middle-aged ladies that lauded both Avatar and Nicholas Sparks. I was really hoping I had been exaggerating, but no.

      • I just died a little inside.

  28. Between Inception and this film, provided they both come through on their promise, could 2010 be the resurgence of sci-fi?

    • I think that sci-fi has been on a huge upswing since “Battlestar” came back. “Star Trek” sealed it, and aside from the “Avatar” speed bump…it’s a new age. :)

      • You have a good point there. Looking back at 2009, between District 9 and Star Trek it’s definitely in the popular culture again. They were so overpowered by the Avatar juggernaut, it’s easy to overlook sometimes. I personally place Avatar more in the fantasy genre. Crossing fingers for a good “Black Hole” remake.

  29. Dude! Those were great! I think my favorite one was Alex Pardee.

  30. I have never seen this. How did I miss it? I’ll watch this several times to make up for it.

Oh, and Batman doesn’t use guns. /nerdgripe

    • I dunno man… I can’t believe I’ve known you this long and never sent it to you!

  31. Rider Strong just looks creepier as he gets older.

Meanwhile, Timothy Hutton gets more awesome. I’ll have to add that last one to my queue.

    • Bartcow Bartcow

The whole premise of SM reminded me of that Onion article “Romantic-Comedy Behavior Gets Real-Life Man Arrested” http://www.theonion.com/content/node/29546. Maybe I didn’t watch enough of it, but I walked away hoping both leads would die in a fire. YMMV, of course, and that’s okay.

  32. Great reviews. Thanks for letting me know what to skip. The obvious objectivity is appreciated, too. Some people might say that reviewing movies would be a cushy job, but, as a person who has the attention span of a gnat, I know how hard it can be to sit through a movie, much less remember points to discuss afterward. I would probably choose waterboarding over that, so, for your efforts, sir, I salute you!

    • Always the student, I take good notes. :)

I tend to take more notes for a bad movie than for a good one. I’ll remember the good ones, but will usually just ctl-alt-del the bad ones right into the forgotten zone.
