[Trailer] Brave (2012)

If you want to know my most anticipated movie of 2012, here is your first glimpse:

Pixar’s first featured heroine – Merida. That alone would have gotten me into the theater but this is beautiful and everything I’ve seen about it is pitch perfect. The word is this story is going to be a little more mature then the previous Pixar outings, looking for more of a Brothers Grimm sort of feel. The voice cast includes Craig Ferguson, Robbie Coltrane, Kevin McKidd, Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly and Kelly Macdonald.Similar Posts:

This is a drastic improvement over the previous trailers.

But, do you see all that pixelated red garbage? No gory movie should ever be presented in 3D where the filmmakers have to use CGI blood. After contemplation on the subject, I realize that not only do I dislike 3D, but I fucking detest computer generated 3D blood. Conan the Barbarian looks like it is going to have oceans of shitty fake blood. It’s a shame, because otherwise this trailer hit the beats much better than past attempts. I especially like how much psychotic glee Jason Momoa as Conan seems to display while spilling red pixels.

The trailer still features some of the crappy generic modern rock soundtrack. Which might be appropriate. If the dark and uninhibited Conan the Barbarian could be summed up by Mastodon, then this new one would be to the tune of Kings of Leon.

When I came across the trailer for 50/50 I was immediately struck by three emotions: sadness, confusion and hope. The reality and seriousness of the subject matter is heart wrenching and may be considered sensitive to some people. Those who are currently dealing with cancer, or those that are cancer survivors, may find the film refreshing in a silver-lining kind of way. And wait a minute, didn’t Seth Rogen already star in a film about terminal illness? I couldn’t help but think of Judd Apatow’s un-funny Funny People. I am hopeful that 50/50 can approach the topic in a respectful manner and still deliver good humor.

I don’t think you can go wrong with cutie Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the main character, 27-year-old Adam. I look forward to seeing his portrayal of a young man whose world has flipped upside down due to a cancer diagnosis. Seth Rogen’s character, Kyle, seems to come across as a loyal-laugh-with-you-not-at-you-medical-marijuana-sharing best friend (token stoner? check). I’m sure there will be some hearty laughs and head-shaking “I can’t believe he said that!” moments, but overall it looks like an uplifting, deeply emotional, and blunt reminder that no matter what age, we’re all mortal and life is short so live it up.

Trailer 2: Conan the Barbarian (2011)

The 1982 Conan the Barbarian is one of my favorite films. The DVD also contains one of my favorite commentary tracks. I do not speak of its sequel, except to note that Grace Jones kicks ass.

When I heard last year that there was a remake in the works, I was skeptical.

The first full-length trailer’s hit YouTube, and I’m still skeptical.

It’s certainly pretty, and as best I can tell through the one- and two-second cuts, it’s reaching for a good balance between taking itself too seriously and slopping over into parody. But John Milius’s Conan had a gravitas I think is missing here, aided in large part by Basil Poledouris’s brilliant score.

The stereoscopic conversion is a turn-off, too, and makes it rather more likely that I’ll see it on DVD or streaming than in the theatre.

But if you’re excited about it, I want to hear it. Tell me why you’re looking forward to, and why. I’d love for you to change my mind.

The second, most impressive trailer for Green Lantern is out and is far superior to the first trailer as well as the other miscellanea that we have seen. To me everything looks wonderful, even the originally embattled CGI. However, I still do not get “Hal Jordan” the man from Ryan Reynolds the actor. To me, Jordan is like Iceman from Top Gun and Han Solo: brash, arrogant, and most important to the Hal Jordan character, NO FEAR. I do not get that from Reynolds at all in the trailers and clips we have seen thus far. He seems too whiny.

Thoughts?

Lighting the way to a June 17 release.

[Trailer] Asylum’s ALMIGHTY THOR (2011)

The well known cinematic hacks from the production company Asylum is at it again – this time gearing up storm the superhero genre. This is a no brainer for Asylum when one considers that Thor is one of the few comic properties where the character and mythos are in large part drawn from the public domain – or at least traditional mythology. Therefore, we have Thor, Odin, and Loki – just like in the major studio tent pole starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman!

Except now Thor has an Uzi.

How many grandparents and childless spinsters buy Asylum offerings for a child in their life thinking it is the “real” thing? I wonder if many recent immigrants or foreign visitors fall for it as well? Piracy is rampart in South America, for example, where it is not unusual for big titles to hit the retail stores at, shortly after, or even before a movie is released in the U.S.

So, if you were held breathless with titles such as Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus, Paranormal Entity, The Haunting of Winchester House, or Sherlock Holmes, then you may be one of the first in line to buy Almighty Thor starring…

Kevin Nash (ping: Mr. Workrate) as Odin — Richard Grieco (yes, that one) as Loki, and — Cody “The Real” Deal as Thor.

Debuting May 7 on the steadily declining Syfy before being available on DVD and VOD everywhere come May 10.

More quiet and contemplative science fiction? Yes please! This small budget indie sci-fi flick is summarized thus:

In “Another Earth,” Rhoda Williams, a bright young woman accepted into MIT’s astrophysics program, aspires to explore the cosmos. A brilliant composer, John Burroughs, has just reached the pinnacle of his profession and is about to have a second child. On the eve of the discovery of a duplicate Earth, tragedy strikes and the lives of these strangers become irrevocably intertwined.

If that is a little too vague for you, I think one can draw from the trailer that what the above description means is that the young brilliant MIT student kills the brilliant composer’s family in a car crash. In a life where she craves redemption, she hopes that she can start over on Another Earth. Unless she find redemption and forgiveness right here on good ol’ Earth One…

Directed by Mike Cahill, writer and director of the under-appreciated King of California.

Release July 22, 2011 in limited theaters.

Once (and still) well known for his fight choreography for The Matrix films and Kill Bill among others, Woo-ping Yuen has never-the-less never been tied to directing crossover hits in the U.S. in the mind of moviegoers. Iron Monkey made a bit of an impact in 2001 riding on the heels of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and its relative success in the U.S. market. Iron Monkey ended up being the 11th highest grossing foreign language film in the U.S. thanks in no small part to Quentin Tarantino’s involvement in bringing the then eight year old film to American screens. Iron Monkey, before being sanitized for U.S. release, was more of a typical Chinese martial arts film that mixed martial acrobatics with humor, history, and nationalism (a far cry from Ang Lee’s Westernized styling in Crouching Tiger).

With True Legend, Woo-ping appears to be back on target with a larger than life kung-fu actioner that contains all of the elements expected of the genre including his own “wire-fu,” secret martial styles, revenge, honor, acrobatic fights, and a bit of goofy humor. The film will get some limited U.S. screenings, but I am unsure if, like Iron Monkey, will be heavily edited for U.S. release.

In the film, Su Can’s (Zhao) respectable life is obliterated when his vengeful brother, Yuan (On), returns from war armed with the deadly Five Venom Fists. Weakened but not destroyed, Su Can learns a never-before-seen form of martial arts: the Drunken Fist. Armed with this new power, he returns home to honor his family through retribution by taking on his brother in a battle to become the ultimate warrior.

Pro tip: Many Asian films are available on DVD well before their U.S. releases. Asia on Film is a popular outlet that sells these DVDs and will ship to the U.S.. Many of the films are also available in VCD format which will solve any region problems with your laptop or VCD enabled DVD/BluRay player. There are also various contributor driven subtitle sites that often provide amateur subtitle files that are easy to use along with the video ripped from a VCD.

Therefore, today I bring you the trailer for True Legend, but tomorrow I will bring you the review.

U.S. theatrical release May 13, 2011.

There have been a lot of versions of The Three Musketeers over the years. I can’t say that I’m going to prefer this one over the others. In fact, watching this traler, I can almost promise you that this will not be my favorite version. It does, however, look like it will be a lot of scenery chewing fun. With Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom, Christoph Waltz and Ray Stevenson in it, it most certainly be pretty too look at and entertaining, if not faithful to the source material.

I have to be honest: I’ve never cared for Captain America. I’ve always though of him as a “hero” in the vein of corny cowpokes John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart. That is to say, to modern eyes looking back, he was a walking and talking propaganda piece; Uncle Sam with a shield getting the young soon to be drafted men ready to be heroes for the country.

I was indifferent to Cap’ until just recently. Things changed some, however, after watching The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes which bucks the Marvel animation trend and provides some damn fine writing and good battle animation. Captain America as written in that animated series is complex, a bit tortured, and does not provide any hint of eye rolling jingoism.*

*I admit that this idea of Cap’ may well be an undeserved preconception. But I think a lot of people share it.

Now with the full trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger in the books, I have to say I am damn interested in this movie.
