Here it is. Here is the day that many people never thought would come. While there certainly is more than one game coming out this week, most of the focus is on one of them.
Duke Nukem Forever - Having been in development since 1997, there are many who never thought this day would come. I played parts of this game last year at PAX. It will likely sell a ridiculous number of copies just because people have been waiting for it for over a decade. I wasn’t too impressed with the game, the controls were awkward and it was frustrating to target things with the guns. I thought, maybe, it was just me and I wasn’t getting it but looking at a lot of the early reviews, it isn’t just me. Still, if you love Duke Nukem, you will appreciate the humor of the game. It wasn’t for me but I am in awe of the fact that the game came out at all. The game takes place about 15 years after the events of Duke Nukem 3D – unsurprisingly. Duke is now a worldwide icon, and has achieved great fame from his heroic deeds and world saving. On his way to the show, Duke witnesses a news broadcast on a nearby television screen announcing that aliens have once again invaded - peacefully this time. Of course, this is Duke Nukem, so that won’t last for long.
Alice: Madness Returns – To continue the trend of long awaited sequels coming out this week, we have this game, the sequel to the 2000 release of American McGee’s Alice. In the mean time, waiting for this game to come out, there was a cancelled Oz title from American McGee that never happened. This game picks up eleven years after the original game (much like the time which has actually passed). At the end of the last game, Alice was released from the asylum and went to live on her own, though still under the care of a psychiatrist. She’s begun to experience memories that have been repressed and these memories make her wonder if her parent’s deaths were as accidental as she originally thought. Eventually, she returns to Wonderland out of a desire for safety and security only to find that it has warped along with her mind.
