Blog on Blog Action: Fake Science

The Internet is full of sites that pander to the lowest common denominator of humor. You can LOL at any species. You can giggle at silly drawings. Every once in a while though, there comes a humorist who manages to combine snark with actual funniness. One such is the relatively-new Tumblr site Fake Science.

When your brain gets tired of learning actual facts, you can retreat to this site, which is full of lessons that are vastly more mentally palatable. Many of the entries are accompanied by illustrations that would be right at home in any educational children’s book or elementary school textbook – except they’re better.

Like dinosaurs? You can learn why a t-rex had short arms or why a triceratops had three horns. If more modern animals are of more interest to you, no problem. You can find out why zebras have stripes.

Into more practical lessons? Well, in one of my favorite entries, you can discover what to do with those jack o’ lanterns left sitting around after Halloween:

That’s just one of the many entries that made me giggle aloud. You also have to stop and wonder just how fake some of this science really is. I mean, I’m pretty sure the entry about where decaffeinated coffee comes from is spot on.

That’s all for this episode, kids. For more information, check out http://fakescience.tumblr.com and follow @FakeScience on the Twitter.
