HAPPY PICO DAY EVERYONE!
Over a month ago, I shared my tenth anniversary on Newgrounds.com. And to my dismay, several of our own Pop Bunker peeps were unaware of this website.
I’m totally going to change that.
Pico Day is one of the few NG holidays that the entire community will celebrate as a whole. Literally everyone who knows Flash will submit some kind of .swf file in a whole spectrum of quality, from a zero (Blam This Piece Of Crap) to a five (WOOT!!! ALL MY 5 R BELONG TO THIS!). It’s kinda like Christmas, but the old skool Christmas in which one celebrates the birth of Christ.
Ironically, Pico Day falls on Newgrounds founder Tom Fulp’s birthday. So in a way, it really is Christmas for the tankmen.
Pico was pretty much the mascot of Newgrounds before Johnny Utah immortalized the little tankman in the logo. The redheaded boy with the devilish charm stirred up controvery and captured hearts as he blasted his way through his school and, five years later, through a massive swarm of Uberkids:
Like all good heroes, Pico has a small posse of two others: Nene, the suicidal ass-kicking Asian, and Darnell, the boy who loves explosives. Even though they’re the best of friends, their competitive nature can turn each one against the other, especially if Tom Fulp casually suggests a fight to the death to find the “King of the Portal.” (Apologies in advance for the crappy quality video that is to follow, but YouTube just doesn’t have a decent version available. Of course, a hero is nothing without a villain, and Pico is surrounded by them. If his friends aren’t trying to kill him, someone from the Flash Portal will. The Uberkids with their bowl-style haircuts are most likely the top annoyance, being the result of the Human Genome project that made them practically superior in every way. However, a really good hero would have an evil equal that doesn’t enter the picture until much later. Superman has Bizarro; Spike Spiegel has Vicious; Wil Wheaton has Evil Wil. Who is Pico’s evil twin? Piconjo, a mysterious and pasty version of Pico, who creates a number of bad flash cartoons on Newgrounds. Seriously, if the author’s name reads “Piconjo,” you’re going to see crap like this.
Spend your Pico Day this year getting to know Pico and all of his past birthdays. You won’t be disappointed.
