My turn, I guess.
Here are Five things that may or may not damage my Geek Cred. Still, I own all of them proudly. We are who we are, right?
1. I like Barry Manilow.
I will sing along to all of the songs that make the whole world sing. I will dance to ‘Copacabana’. I will feel my heartstrings tugged when I hear ‘Mandy’ or ‘Weekend in New England’. I will get hungry when I hear the Big Mac jingle.
I won’t apologize for it either. I also won’t apologize for Dan Folgelberg, Christopher Cross, or Air Supply. So there.
2. I HATE ANIME.
In all forms, including Manga. I don’t like the art style, I don’t like reading books backwards, I don’t like hyper-deformity.
Don’t even get me started on how stupid Hentai is.
3. I’ve never seen an episode of “Dr. Who.”
I know, right?
I just can’t seem to develop an interest in it. Still, I think I saw almost every episode of “Sliders” – which was a cheap rip-off of the concept.
4. I am a Gossip Girl fan.
While I don’t watch it live (I buy the DVDs and marathon the episodes), I am a watcher of “Gossip Girl.” I don’t know why, but I really like this show. Seriously. I can’t explain it. It’s goofy, absurdly unrealistic, most of the plots are threadbare, and the people are all so God. Damn. Pretty. Still…I’m there for the adventures of Serena, Blair, Chuck, Jenny, Dan, Nate, and Vanessa till the end. XOXO.
5. “Once Bitten“
I loved this movie from the first time I saw it. It’s not Jim Carrey’s first movie, and not even his first hit, but thanks to HBO showing it 5 times a week for a couple of years, I came to love it like no other.
Also, this was the kind of vampire story that a pre-teen Elwood could get behind. Mark Kendall is a nice guy, trying to get through high school without any major drama. He’s popular with his friends, but not the school at large. He’d really like to get laid, too, but his hot girlfriend Robin (Karen Kopins) is trying to make sure he loves her first, etc etc.
Enter The Countess, in the magical and gorgeous form of Lauren Hutton. She seduces and transforms young Mark, and the wacky hijinx ensue. There are misunderstandings, chases, a school dance scene, and a riotous cartoon-ish sequence involving multiple coffins.
Oh, and Cleavon Little steals the entire movie. As he does.

GOD I LOVE ONCE BITTEN! I’m on board with anime, have seen four eps of Dr. Who (a few old, a few new) and like it, but not enough for it to make it into an obsession. Never seen Gossip Girl.
I’ll not comment on the music. I can listen to Air Supply if I’m in the right mood.
Part of the problem is that I jocked at a Yesterday Favorites… radio station and heard as much Christopher Cross and Manilow as I could possibly ever take. New Elton John and Celine Dion, same. I have a whole list of artists that working in that format made = to vomit for me.
Well, we can agree on Once Bitten at least!
Guh. Barry Manilow. Guh. Just… guh.
Great contributions all around!
I LOVE Gossip Girl, but I know exactly why (and I actually think it’s beautifully plotted: the way the stories spin out of each other every week and all manage to focus on whatever the theme is we’re going for…well, I just love that. Could sing the writing’s praises for days).
To me, it’s the same reason I love a lot of genre stuff and superhero comics: the characters are these larger-than-life iconic personas who are always, always undone by the dumbest, simplest of human emotions. And I love that Schwartz and Savage’s motto is “no heroes, no villains.” I think you see that really clearly, especially when it comes to what they’ve done with someone like Jenny.

Granted, I’m always a season behind, but I know what you’re saying. Shades of Well-Financed Gray.
All this talk about Manilow and Air Supply has made our google ads go a bit crazy if you haven’t noticed.

Don’t ask the question if you don’t want the answers, and their consequences.
For the Record: Michael Bolton sucks.
I’ll be honest with you, I love his music. I do. I’m a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, I don’t know if it gets any better than when he sings “When a Man Loves a Woman”.
