[Trailer] The Asylum’s “Sherlock Holmes” (2010)

For those that don’t know, The Asylum is a low budget film studio that produces movies on the cheap and fast in order to take advantage of pop trends and elements inspired by hit movies. Already released is a movie called Paranormal Entity which of course was inspired by the micro-budget hit Paranormal Activity. It actually looks pretty good and would not take a lot to be better than its inspiration. It’s not like the budgets are likely much different.

So being the smart knock-off artists that they are, The Asylum put in production a Sherlock Holmes movie to play off the popularity of the Robert Downey Jr. hit – and hopefully (for The Asylum) dupe some gullible spenders into buying their version due to seeing a Sherlock Holmes title on the new release shelf. The release of The Asylum’s Sherlock Holmes is January 26.

An added geek bonus is that Watson is being played by Torchwood alum Gareth David-Lloyd who played Captain Jack’s lover Ianto Jones through the series three Children of the Earth.

Anyway, take a look at this poster. Wow! From what I can tell that is a dinosaur, a dragon, and a freaking kraken or something. It’s a bizarre direction to take Holmes, though it will clearly set it apart from its theatrical cousin, and does somehow jive with Conan Doyle’s other works like The Lost World.

I’m a Holmes purist, but I’ve learned my lesson with the current theatrical release. That lesson is that there is more than one way to interpret Holmes while maintaining the spirit of the classic work. Plus, frankly, the trailer is a little bit of awesome!
