Strong Enough to Help the Green Lantern Movie?

Strong Enough to Help the Green Lantern Movie?

There are those among us who feel certain that the upcoming Green Lantern movie is a sure sign of the Pop Culture Apocalypse. The casting choices of Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan and Blake Lively as Carol Ferris have sparked alllllll kindsa controversy, bringing out, as my friend Sarah Kuhn over at Alert Nerd says, the rage of the Red (Internet) Lanterns.

While I’m not ready to spew up napalm over it, I have been disappointed to see more and more evidence of this movie being not so much a treat for those of use who love Green Lantern, as just another “event” to cash in on the current popularity of the comic-movie genre. Today’s reading did bring me a piece of news that may actually induce me to see the movie. It seems that Mark Strong, lately of Sherlock Holmes,  is the favorite to be cast as Sinestro, and I have to admit being a bit excited about that.

Not only do I have no problem seeing Strong filling this role, but I’m convinced that this guy can play just about any part. He won me over completely as Septimus in the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Stardust, in which I completely bought every second of his performance as a sword-wielding corpse.

Still, I’m not convinced that even this actor, for whom I have a ton of respect, can turn the tide on this one. With the exception of Jon Favreau’s Iron Man franchise, I pretty much wish all the comic book movies would just go away until Hollywood learns how to do them right. Stop trying to make events, people. Just make good movies that’ll stand on their own merit. Casting Mark Strong is a step in the right direction, but there are miles to go.
