I have to take this one with a grain or entire Mortons blue cylinder of salt. According to the Hindustan Times, of all places, it is confirmed that High School Musical teeny heart-throb Zac Efron is confirmed as Spider-Man.
Actor Zac Efron is set for a 9-million-pound payday for his role as Spider Man. The High School Musical star will step into Tobey Maguire’s shoes for the fourth blockbuster movie, slated to start shooting later this year and hit theaters in 2012.
They have figure in there, but no source.
Producers of the Spider Man franchise reckon that the 22-year-old, who has a huge teen following, will bring new fans to the Spider-Man series. They are also believed to be considering reuniting Zac with his High School Musical co-star Vanessa Hudgens, 21. She is hotly tipped to replace Kirsten Dunst, 27, as Spider-Man’s love interest.
This sounds like bullshit. I can’t see any advantage to dovetailing the HSM franchise in with the Spidey franchise. In fact, it seems like that would lock out many Spidey fans who get pissed at this potential gimmick casting.
The article also states that Toby Maguire “quit” as Spider-Man last year and suggested Efron as his replacement. That claim seems to go against most of the other confirmed news out there with regard to these last few months and the Spider-Man franchise.
This claim comes on the heels of Marc Webb being named director for the next three movies of the suddenly re-booted franchise. Webb’s most known work is last years (500) Days of Summer, a quintessential example of a movie that does everything possible to strip a man of manliness. With Webb onboard and the possibility of Efron playing Spider-Man, I have to wonder if this is going to be the superhero movie for concave-chested hipsters? This is starting to sound like a Twilight fans twigasm version of a Spider-Man movie.
