2010 BAFTA Award Nominations | Line Leading to Cameron’s Feet Grows

bread line img 2 2010 BAFTA Award Nominations | Line Leading to Camerons Feet GrowsThe nominations for the British Academy of Television and Arts (BAFTA) are out and, I guess as expected, the institution steps right in-line with other major awards for the privilege to kiss James Cameron’s King of the Universe Ring. I didn’t dislike Avatar even though I was skeptical of the movie and I don’t dislike Cameron, but I hate when things get out of control for a fad movie during awards season and other movies are completely ignored. Cameron seems to have that effect specifically. I’d not even have a problem with that if it was not for how hard it is for other mainstream/genre movies to even get a look in the nine years out of a decade that Cameron does not have a movie nominated.

My personal favorite movie of 2009, Moon from writer/director Duncan Jones and starring Sam Rockwell, again draws what amounts to a giant gob of snot with its only nominations in Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer. Maybe that’s better than a gob of snot, but the exclusion of Moon yet again from a the overall best film category* is a damn shame and another complete snub of Sam Rockwell’s performance is nearing criminal and all but kills any Academy Awards momentum Rockwell had.

In all, the list is a dreary example of lock step nominations all the way down to Avatar and the regimental popping of James Cameron’s ass pimples with the teeth of awards season**.

*The complete list for best film is below, but I am amazed with how the list reflects movies that had one excellent element in otherwise average fare. Precious has a great perforce to take it to above average and Avatar has amazing special effects in what is otherwise a good-plus movie at best.

**Avatar should win almost every technical award in any presentation this year; I don’t even have a problem with Cameron winning director for Avatar is an amazing achievement. But it is not in even close to the best film of the year. A best film should reflect an outstanding achievement across the board. For simplicity sake lets call the places on the board vision, screenplay, and acting. Cameron’s film no question gets a 100/100 for vision, but the screenplay and acting are average to good. I think an outstanding film needs to bring more to the table.
