“The Prophet,” a French crime drama from the impeccable Jacques Audiard (The Beat That My Heart Skipped) is rolling out promotional probably to coincide with awards season and a foreign Academy Award push. I started getting the buzz a few months ago regarding this film that some are calling an instant crime drama classic. The trailer and some scenes that I have seen look very promising.
As a side not, one of my favorite crime dramas of all time is Jaques Becker’s 1960 prison film, Le Trou, which I would hardily recommend to anyone.
Plot Summary: Condemned to six years in prison, Malik El Djebena cannot read not write. Arriving at the jail entirely alone, he appears younger and more fragile than the other convicts. He is 19 years old. Cornered by the leader of the Corsican gang who rules the prison, he is given a number of “missions” to carry out, toughing him up and gaining the gang leader’s confidence in the process. But Malik is brave and a fast learner, daring to secretly develop his own plans. -ComingSoon.net
