The Smashing Pumpkins have released the first of 44 songs that is to make up the next “album.” Each song is going to be available for free before the entire (I assume box) CD is sold.
I’m an old school Pumpkins fan who thought Billy Corgan and company should have left what was their tail-spinning career alone. 2007′s Zeitgeist proved that sentiment correct for it featured incredibly forgetful songs, the lack of any single catchy tune, and buzzsaw over-produced noise that rendered the entire album, and Corgan’s nasally and for some reason uncompressed (mix enhanced) voice, un-listenable.
The first song from the new album (read:long playlist) is “Song for a Son.” It may not say much, but it is at least an improvement over every effort on “Zeiteigst.”
Give it a listen…

I was disappointed in Zeitgeist too, but I didn’t hate it. Mellon Collie is my ‘Pumpkins album, but I like a few things from the albums since, especially some of the b-sides.
I like this new one though. I like the piano and mellowness and it makes me look forward to the next one. I tend to prefer their more laid-back tracks now, though teenage-me was a fan of the distortion and yelling.
Right, me too. I mean, I can still groove to being a rat in a cage, but I like the kinda twisted melodic stuff. This song is a step in the right direction.
