It was like… District 9

New and hopefully reoccurring feature on popbunker.net, It was like…

We do it all the time. You know, you see a hot new movie, read a talked about book, listen to that high concept album and you try to put into words what you’ve experienced. The problem is everyone else is doing the same thing – probably better. So instead of reviewing, I’m going to tell you what it was like.

District 9 (2009)

THE STORY
It was like a novel co-written by Ray Bradbury and A.E. Van Vogt. The concept reminded me of straight Martian Chronicles Bradybury: A spaceship breaks down on Earth and leads to an alien race being subjected to apartheid. The human protagonist could have been inspired by one of the many characters from A.E. Vogt’s vault of stories were a man representing a government or corporation finds allies in the ranks of aliens or off-worlders that he had previously worked against.

THE CINEMATOGRAPHY
It was like a unique hybrid of gritty realism similar to City of Gods with other stylistic qualities comparable to the 2007 gem from Spain, [Rec] and the television show The Office, along with news commentary ala Romero. The narrative revealed through the cinematography progresses from a combination of documentary style footage, newscasts, security footage, and videographer-like hand-held through the fist half to more traditional film narrative in the second half.

THE DIRECTION
It was like… well, the most similar I can come up with in direction is not Peter Jackson, Spielberg, or Cameron – but rather Danny Boyle. The way the movie handled the gargantuan scope and hammer-less allegory with a subtle cleverness is unlike any director currently working with the exception of Boyle. Neill Blomkamp is very good. This is an unbelievable fist film (like Duncan Jones’ Moon) and my excitement is palatable for coming soon projects. And for what might come in three years (those that have seen it know what I mean).

DISTRICT 9
It was like a Bradybury-Van Vogt story translated to a screenplay by William Goldman and directed by Danny Boyle.
